We have been busy with EICRs across Newcastle upon Tyne recently.
While testing a bank of four properties in Dumpling Hall, we found an 8.5kW shower circuit whose conductors had simply been pushed into the protective device. There was no termination at all, and the entry showed clear signs of heat damage.
It is lucky this never started a fire. Loose connections on high-current circuits like showers and cookers are one of the most common causes of electrical fires, and they are exactly what an Electrical Installation Condition Report is designed to find.
Do you need an EICR?
Private landlords in England must have their electrical installation inspected at least every five years. Homeowners should consider one every ten years, when buying an older property, or before major renovation.
