Electrical faults rarely happen at a convenient time. NE1 Electrical runs a genuine 24-hour emergency line for homes, landlords and businesses across Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead and the rest of Tyne and Wear. When you call, you speak to a qualified electrician who can tell you straight away whether it is safe to wait or whether we need to come out now.
On arrival we make the installation safe first, find the cause rather than just resetting the breaker, and explain what we found in plain English. Where a repair can be done there and then, it usually is. Where it cannot, we leave you with power to as much of the property as is safe and a fixed price for the rest.
What counts as an electrical emergency?
If something electrical is putting people or property at risk, or you've lost power to essential circuits, it's an emergency. The common ones we attend across Newcastle are below. If you're not sure, ring us: we'll tell you honestly whether it can wait until a booked visit.
- Complete loss of power to your home or business when the rest of the street still has power
- An RCD or breaker that trips again as soon as you reset it
- A burning smell, smoke, scorch marks or melting around a socket, switch, light or the fuse board
- Sparks, crackling or buzzing from accessories or the consumer unit
- Water coming through a ceiling light or onto sockets after a leak
- Damaged or exposed cables after building work, a break-in or a vehicle impact
- Loss of power to heating, a stairlift, medical equipment, freezers or a fridge full of stock
What to do while you wait
Your safety comes first. These steps are safe for anyone to do and help us find the fault faster when we arrive.
- Switch off at the main switch. If it's safe to reach the consumer unit, turn the main switch off. Don't touch anything that's hot, wet, sparking or smells of burning.
- Leave if there's smoke or fire. Get everyone out and dial 999. Don't try to tackle an electrical fire with water.
- Check if it's just you. If neighbours have lost power too, it's likely a network fault. Call Northern Powergrid on 105. If it's only your property, call us.
- Unplug appliances. If a breaker keeps tripping, unplug everything on that circuit. A faulty kettle, washing machine or outdoor light is often the cause.
- Call 07849 600035. Tell us what happened, what you can see and which breakers are off. We'll give you an honest arrival time.
How our emergency call-outs work
You speak to the electrician who'll attend, not a call centre. On the phone we work out how urgent it is and give you an arrival time. We're based in Newcastle and cover the whole city, so call-outs anywhere from the city centre and Jesmond to Benwell, Heaton and Byker are usually quick.
On site, we make the installation safe first, then find the actual cause using calibrated test equipment, rather than just resetting the breaker and leaving. Where the repair can be done there and then, it usually is: we carry common parts including RCBOs, accessories and cable. If a bigger repair is needed, we restore power to as much of the property as is safe and give you a fixed price for the rest.
Every emergency visit ends with a written record of what we found and what we did, and a certificate for any repair that needs one.
How much does an emergency electrician cost in Newcastle?
Emergency call-outs cost more than booked daytime work because an electrician is available around the clock. We tell you the call-out charge on the phone before we set off, so there are no surprises. Parts and any repair beyond making safe are quoted before we do them.
If the job can wait until the next working day without risk, we'll say so and book you in at the normal rate. Many problems that feel urgent, such as one dead socket, can be safely left until a booked slot.

Questions about emergency electrician
Do you really answer at night and weekends?
Yes. The emergency line, 07849 600035, is answered 24 hours a day, including weekends and bank holidays.
What should I do before you arrive?
If it's safe, switch off the main switch at the consumer unit. Don't touch anything hot, wet or smelling of burning. If there's smoke or fire, leave and dial 999.
How fast can you get to me?
It depends on location and time of day, but urgent faults are prioritised and we're based in Newcastle, so most of the city is a short drive away. We give an honest arrival time on the phone.
How much is an emergency call-out?
Out-of-hours call-outs cost more than booked daytime work. We tell you the call-out charge before we set off, and quote any repair before doing it.
My power is off and so is the whole street. Should I call you?
No. That's usually a network fault, so call Northern Powergrid on 105. If only your property is off, call us.
My RCD keeps tripping. Is that an emergency?
If it won't stay on, or you smell burning, yes. Unplug everything and try again. If it still trips, call us.
Do you cover Gateshead and the rest of Tyne and Wear?
Yes. We cover Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead, Wallsend, Longbenton and surrounding Tyne and Wear.
Can you help landlords and letting agents out of hours?
Yes. We attend tenant emergencies out of hours and send the landlord or agent a report with photos.
